Obituary of Delfin Mathew Nunes

Delfin Mathew Nunes, age 22, of Bridgeport, passed away suddenly on Sunday, June 13, 2021 surrounded by his loving mother, father and sister. Deli Mathew was born in Bridgeport on December 31, 1998 to Evelyn Berrios of Bridgeport and Delfim Nunes of Shelton. He was a graduate of Fairchild Wheeler High School, and studied electrical technology at Porter & Chester Institute. He was most recently employed as an electrician with Tomas Electric, which he very much enjoyed.

Deli Mathew was dedicated to his favorite sports teams - LA Lakers, NY Mets, NY Jets, and SLB Benfica - and would often wear their apparel with pride. He recently started training jiu jitsu at Iceman's Martial Arts Academy, and was very passionate about the sport. Deli Mathew was proud to be a white belt with four stripes. He was so excited to earn his blue belt, which was an incredible accomplishment. A posthumous blue belt was presented to his sister Jasmina in his honor. In addition to the physical exercise and personal discipline it taught him, the friends he trained with became a second family and he loved spending every second he could at the gym. He also enjoyed playing video games, watching anime, and spending time with friends in his free time. If he knew that his Tia Bella made his favorite chocolate chip cookies, it wouldn't be long before he showed up to sneak off with as many cookies as he could fit in his pockets and down his shirt. Deli Mathew was goofy and fun-loving, and brought us all more joy in his short 22 years than most people do in much longer lifetimes.

Perhaps Deli Mathew's most admirable qualities were the love and dedication to his family. Despite having to wake up early and work long hours, he still made sure to go to his Avó and Avô house for weekly Monday night dinners. On every other night of the week, he would visit his beloved nieces Maliah and Mylah on his way home from work. Not many young men his age were even half as good with kids as he was, and his nieces had him wrapped around their fingers! He was so close to his mom and his abuela Elsa, and talked often about their influence in his life. Deli Mathew's cousins Kimberly and Leslie Berrios and Christian, Rachel, and Alexandra Barroso considered him to be more like a brother than a cousin. In fact, extended family members often considered him to be just another one of their cousins, as he was just so loveable. He was the life of every party, and had an infectious laugh that would bring a smile to everyone that heard it.

In addition to his mother Evelyn and his father Delfim, Deli Mathew's loved ones include his sister Jasmina Berrios and nieces Maliah and Mylah Vines, sisters Charlotte and Ella Nunes, maternal grandmother, Elsa Berrios, paternal grandparents, Antonio and Maria Teresa Nunes, and paternal great grandmother, Etelvina DeAlmeida. He also had very close relationships with many aunts and uncles, including Isabel (Bella) Barroso and her husband Joe, Antonio (Tito) Nunes, Harry Berrios, Felix Berrios, Noel Oquendo, Melvin Rodriguez, and his Godparents, Fernando and Nicole Queiroz. He leaves behind many cousins, great aunts and uncles, and many dear friends to cherish his memory.

We would like to give special thanks to the Sanchez family, Bella, Michael and Abby, who worked tirelessly to bring our Deli Mathew home. While we can never understand why he was taken from us so soon, we take comfort in the outpouring of love and support from family and friends. It has given his family further evidence to a simple fact - Deli Mathew was loved by all who were lucky enough to know him. He was a pure soul and the embodiment of love and all things good, and he will be dearly missed.

A walk-through visitation will take place Friday, June 25, 2021 from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Road, Trumbull. It is appreciated that visitors wear masks and social distance as they walk through, pay their respects, and exit without lingering to ensure all guests can come through the building. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, June 26, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. directly in St. Augustine Cathedral, 359 Washington Ave., Bridgeport. Interment will follow in Mountain Grove Cemetery, Bridgeport.

In lieu of flowers, the family has decided to make donations to causes that Deli Mathew cared most about. Contributions will be made in his honor to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, Porter & Chester Institute, and to the creation of college funds for his nieces Maliah and Mylah. All further donations will be used for expenses associated with bringing our sweet Deli Mathew home from Puerto Rico.
