Obituary of Katherine Marie Weiant
Katherine Marie Weiant (née McGaughey), age 87, of Trumbull, loving wife and mother of two children, passed away on Sunday, August 20, 2023.
Kathy was born in 1936 in New Brunswick, New Jersey to the late Ernest and Agnes McGaughey (née Myhre). She pursued her passion for medicine at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital School of Nursing. When money became tight after the early passing of her father Ernest from Hodgkin's Lymphoma, she returned home to New Jersey to receive a degree in Home Economics from Douglass College at Rutgers University in 1958. Kathy married her beloved husband Monroe Weiant shortly thereafter.
Kathy was fiercely independent, whip-smart, and cared deeply for her loved ones. She was a woman of many stories and invested passionately in the lives of others — her family fondly remembers hours spent over good meals or on the telephone. Famous for her decadent rum cake and her holiday roast, some of her family's most cherished memories were gathering for traditional Norwegian Christmas Eve celebrations at her festive home. Following in the footsteps of her parents who gave to their community without expectations, she was generous with her time, love, and things. During the highs and lows of life, she was consistently refined and resourceful — she taught herself to sew and made clothing for both herself and her mother so impeccably that she won "best dressed" in high school. Quoting her college yearbook, Kathy was "sophisticated and proper, but lots of fun."
In addition to her beloved husband of 65 years, Monroe, survivors include two loving children, Bruce Weiant and his wife Elaine and Susan Smith and her husband Christopher, two granddaughters, Emily Hamilton and her husband Kyle and Sarah Smith and her partner Derek VanKerkhove, nephew, Erik McGaughey and his wife Deb, great nephews and great niece, Zachary, Charli and Emily. She was predeceased by her siblings, John McGaughey and his wife Erna and Rosalie Gallini.
A graveside service will take place on Monday, August 28, 2023 at 11 a.m. directly in the St. Catherine Mausoleum at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 1056 Daniels Farm Rd., Trumbull.
